What's the 'big idea'
As a recently arrived architect in St. John's, I've noticed the movement from downtown to suburban developments - Hebron Way, Mount Pearl, Galway spring to mind. On the drive into the city from CBS there are plenty of in-progress developments and subdivisions. While I understand the commercial imperatives, convenience and accessibility which drives businesses to consider relocating from downtown - the extent of urban sprawl and sense of unrestricted growth should be a major concern for St. John's.
What does it mean for the context and future character of the City of St. John's, and how does Downtown remain relevant, unique and attractive as a place to live, work and relax?
This was brought into sharp focus this week, when CBC News published the following: 'Echoes of emptiness in downtown St. John's buildings as companies exit'
The fact that 330,000 sq.ft of prime downtown office space remains unoccupied should concern us all and I'm keen to understand what the 'big idea' and plan is for the City's urban renaissance. Cohesive urban design should be at the forefront to help create vibrant and cherished places where communities can thrive.
My assumption is that Architects, Urban Planners and other Stakeholders are working together with the City to produce an Urban Design Compendium which provides a framework for future development, raises the quality of the built environment and ensures a cohesive and sustainable Downtown. I for one am looking forward to reading it.
